I use these decals for my beginning students. This vinyl fingerboard decal easily solves one of the basic problems faced by beginning stringed instrument students -- where to put the fingers! When first starting out, there are so many different things that the student has to remember, and it helps a lot to have a visual indicator for finger position. Traditional method used by most teachers is to mark the positions with individual pieces of tape -- but that can leave a residue on the fingerboard, and cause the strings to buzz. In addition, the traditional tapes usually only indicate three or four notes, because they are difficult and time-consuming to place correctly. And, from what I've seen from the local orchestra teachers, they usually aren't put on in the right places. Then, because the tapes can be felt by the fingertips, the student becomes much more dependent on them than on the Don't Fret(tm). The "Don't Fret" vinyl decal will last for about a year to 18 months in normal use (about the length of time the student will need it), and then will remove easily with little residue (easily cleaned). It is thin enough that it does not interfere with the strings, and doesn't make them buzz. It just makes it easier to learn to fiddle! The first five positions are all clearly marked, which allows the student to learn the higher positions much earlier. NEW! The "First Fret" is a shorter, simpler version of the "Don't Fret". This item marks only the first position. Since it is less expensive, and a little easier to apply, I plan to switch entirely to the "First Fret" decal over the next few months.
